Our Newest Designer: Donovan Lord

Meet Donovan Lord

Background

I always loved architecture and interior design. As a kid, I would design houses and floor plans with crayons, Lincoln Logs and playing cards. I also constantly rearranged my room and my mom’s house.

I received my bachelor’s degree in interior architecture and design and my master’s degree in architecture from the Academy of Art University. I wanted to be knowledgeable about the entire structure, not just the interiors.

I ran my own marketing and web/graphic design business before starting my own interior design firm in 2005. I incorporated architecture into my work after I received my master’s.

In addition to design, I am a licensed real estate broker with my own brokerage firm. I sell to friends, family and the occasional client.

Personally, I have been married now for eight years. I have two dogs, Jax (named for my favorite artist Jackson Pollack) and Raven. I play the violin, piano, and occasionally the guitar. I also enjoy painting in oils (mostly abstract art), photography, and for the past several years, I’ve been writing a memoir that I hope to have published this year.

Personal style

My personal style is very modern – I love midcentury modern, contemporary and some transitional. My home is filled with iconic furniture designed by Eames, Le Corbusier and vintage midcentury antiques, as well as furnishings that I designed and had made. I like my home to be warm, modern, and not feel overly decorated, but a result of my personality and style.

That being said, I design all styles!

Design inspiration

I love Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, as well as Daniel Liebskind, Rem Koolhaus and ANYTHING by Eames. As for publications, I’m a fan of Architectural Digest, Dwell and Atomic Ranch. I design each space to fit the client’s preferences, wishes and how they use the room. So, it’s not only what looks best, but what functions for their lifestyle.

Design strategy

Design is a skill, so it translates to any design aesthetic. My job is to design a space not for myself, but for its inhabitants. It’s about LISTENING and truly understanding their needs, wants and preferences. After that, it’s all fun!

Current projects

I’m currently working on a complete remodel and architectural changes at an Austin lakehouse. I’m also spearheading the revamp of our studio here in the Design District!
